Fine Homebuilding

Fine Homebuilding, December 1987/January 1988, featured Robert Phillips' work in their Finishing Touches section entitled Victorian Heavy Metal. "Austin, Tex., craftsman Robert Phillips often uses galvanized metal on the homes he builds and renovates to give the structures a Victorian flare. Instead of concealing the fasteners, he displays them prominently by working them into patterns. Sometimes cast-iron rosettes and stars are used as washers. On the porch...finial pendants trim the butt joints of the fascias. Phillips has also fabricated gable ornaments and a widow's walk that incorporate classical motifs and good-omen signs. The cold, grey, austere nature of the metal is softened and transformed by the patterns, reveals and shadows." Page 81.
